Quarterly board presentation that doubled as the de-facto interview for SVP promotion.

Promoted within the quarter. Chair specifically called out 'a noticeable shift in command of the room.'

"I'd been told for two years I needed 'more executive presence.' Nobody explained what that actually meant until I worked with Sean."

Executive presence had been on this leader's promotion feedback for two years running. Nobody had ever broken down what it actually was.

I worked the problem in three layers:

  • Composure. Drilled the muscle of pausing before answering a hard board question — two seconds of silence instead of two seconds of "um, well." Practised it against simulated board pushback until it was automatic.
  • The three-sentence summary. Every board update now opened with: the headline, the one reason it mattered, what was needed from the room. No preamble, no recap of how the team got there.
  • Conviction in language. Stripped tentative phrases — "I think maybe", "this might not be quite right" — out of every prepared section. Practised committing to recommendations even when 80% sure.

The next quarterly board reading was the cleanest the chair had seen from this leader. The SVP promotion came through the following month.
